abstract = {An age-dependent Verhulst death factor was implemented using the Penna bit string model. Adaptation is simulated by decreasing the effect of carrying capacity at certain ages. We have shown that the sudden immunity to environmental effects produces population with greater size, higher diversity index, and extended lifespan. Older individuals are able to adapt to the environment.},

We used a Shannon-type measure to quantify genetic diversity. At stable populations, the diversity decreases with increasing mutation delay. abstract = {The Penna-bit string approach is used as a framework for the genetic diversity investigations of continuous and periodic mutation implementations. We quantify genetic diversity with time in Penna model populations using Shannon diversity index as a measure. The absence of deaths due to mutation accumulation removes selection and results to all populations reaching the same genome. We find that periodic mutation in this case allows the population to reach homogeneity at a much larger time than continuous mutations. On the other hand, the presence of selection results to conservation of diversity. We also know that populations under periodic mutation with selection case tend to be more genetically diverse before reaching steady-state diversity than continuous mutation implementation.},

abstract = {The Penna bit string model is used as a framework for the genetic diversity investigations of continuous (every time step) and periodic mutation implementations of a semelparous population. We quantify genetic diversity using a Shannon-type measure. The absence of deaths due to mutation accumulation removes selection and results to the entire population reaching the same genome. We find that periodic mutation in this case allows the population to reach homogeneity at a much later time compared to the case of continuous mutations. Our results indicate that periodic mutation with selection has a higher genetic diversity compared to that of continuous mutation.},
