abstract = {We calculate the hybrid entanglement entropy between coin and walker degrees of freedom in a non-unitary quantum walk. The model possesses a joint parity and time-reversal symmetry or PT-symmetry and supports topological phases when this symmetry is unbroken by its eigenstates. An asymptotic analysis at long times reveals that the quantum walk can indefinitely sustain hybrid entanglement in the unbroken symmetry phase even when gain and loss mechanisms are present. However, when the gain-loss strength is too large, the PT-symmetry of the model is spontaneously broken and entanglement vanishes. The entanglement entropy is therefore an effective and robust parameter for constructing PT-symmetry and topological phase diagrams in this non-unitary dynamical system.},

abstract = {We construct an effective Hamiltonian for the non-unitary evolution operator of a multi-step quantum walk with a mechanism for gain and loss. This Hamiltonian is expressed in the basis of the identity and Pauli operators to make its spectrum easy to calculate and its symmetries evident. The parametrization we use allows for an efficient evaluation of the phase boundary where the PT-symmetry of the model is known to be spontaneously broken and shows that the effective Hamiltonian, although non-Hermitian, is real.},

abstract = {The Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model for a two-dimensional topological insulator, insulator with conducting edges, is modified. In particular, we introduce a coupling between opposite spins that preserves the model{\textquoteright}s time reversal invariance. We derive the wave function and the existence conditions for the edge states. With these conditions and tight-binding calculations, we show that that the edge states are robust when the coupling is weak and lesser than the material parameter characterizing the spin-orbit coupling.},

abstract = {We consider the dependence to statistical distribution of disorder for attaining disorder-induced topological Anderson insulator (TAI) phase characterized by quantized conductance plateau established in HgTe quantum well simulations. The renormalization of parameters that explains the transition from metal to TAI phase under the effective medium theory proposed by Groth et al. are proportional to the strength of disorder and not explicitly on its statistics. We then suppose that as long as the strength of disorder can be defined, under the appropriate conditions, the system will exhibit the TAI phase. We compare, for instance, the disorder drawn from Gaussian distribution to the case of disorder drawn from a uniform distribution where TAI phase is initially demonstrated. We found that the first case exhibits TAI phase but is not as robust as the uniform distribution case. Inspection of the Gaussian type of disorder is pursued due to vast observation of such distribution in nature. We consider as well the condition when the uniform distribution is discrete, as opposed to being continuous. Lastly, we discuss a possible generalization under the effective medium theory.},

abstract = {The disorder-induced topological Anderson insulator (TAI) has a similar characteristic to a topological insulator, i.e. insulator in the bulk but conductor in the boundary. In the framework of an effective medium theory, we show that at the transition to TAI from a weaker disorder regime, the conditions for the edge states to exist are appropriately changed yet the physics remains unaltered. This then led us to explore the behavior of edge states at the domain wall of a TAI and a non-TAI through numerical simulations.},
